In 1980, an Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) project in Hawaii (started by college students with the funding of the Hawaii State government) was launched with the goal of creating a thermocouple electricity generator. As part of this project, a very long pipeline was built that went down to 3,000 feet below sea level in order to access cold ocean water.
